To the cheers of more than 600 students, Tom Bentley was
announced as the 2016-17 Support Staff Employee of the Year for MCPS. Students
lined up after the announcement to hug Bentley, the senior custodian at Falling
Branch Elementary. Bentley has worked at MCPS for 32 years.
Bentley was nominated by his school principal, Julie Vanidestine,
for the award. In her nomination, she states “I am fortunate to have a head
custodian who is self-motivated to quality both in his personal performance as
well as in his team’s performance on a daily basis.” Bentley leads a staff of
three other custodians, providing a strong example, direct training, daily
checklists and team meetings.
“Mr. Bentley is a vital part of the FBE staff, but his
impact is felt beyond the way he keeps our school safe and clean,” said Vanidestine.
“He has a unique gift of connecting with students. He is kind, positive and
committed to the overall success of our children.”
Bentley began his career as a part-time custodian. His
strong work ethic has allowed him to achieve the status of a senior custodian.
Bentley was chosen from 22 other nominees for this award.
The Support Staff Employee of the Year award recognizes employees who demonstrate
leadership qualities and contribute to MCPS in an exceptional manner.
The Support Staff Employee of the Year is selected at the
end of one school year and serves for the following
school year.
